Ireland

Nationaal Park Wicklow Mountains

Irish Fairies
Stories of Irish fairies are still very popular in Irish culture. They are a part of Irish history. The Irish really believed in them. Fairies were both feared and respected and they didn’t always look like the cute fairies you see in the movies. There are seven types of Irish fairies: merrow, dullahan, pooka, leprechaun, changelings, grogoch and banshee. Let’s introduce two of them.

The pooka is a small creature with hair all over its body. It has large
ears and yellow eyes and looks a bit scary. They say it brings bad luck
to farmers.

The leprechaun is a tiny man. He has a red beard, red cheeks and                                                                   pointy ears. He makes a lot of jokes.

Creatures of Ireland
Irish creatures play an important role in the movie and theatre business. Have you seen one of the following creatures on your screen?
Merrow:
Merrows are people from the sea. Merrow men have green hair and teeth.
Merrow women are beautiful, with long, curly hair.
                                                  Dullahan:
The dullahan is a headless man on a horse. He carries his head around                                                      in his arms.  His face has a wide smile from ear to ear. His eyes are black.
       Balor:
Balor is an Irish giant. He is enormously tall, with long, hairy arms and legs.
He has one eye in his head.
