Today's lesson goals :

- knowing more about formal and informal writing style

- being expert at using conditional sentences 

CONDITIONALS

A - let's try

1. You'll always be worried, if you are short of money.
2. I'll hopefully live to a good age, if I keep doing these exercises.

4. Unless you look for the good things in life, you'll never be happy.

IF - zinnen = conditionals

Een if-zin bestaat uit twee gedeelten: het gedeelte dat begint met ‘if’ (if he runs)- de voorwaarde, en het hoofdgedeelte van de zin (he will be on time). Het maakt geen verschil of je de zin met het hoofdgedeelte laat beginnen of met if. Er zijn vier verschillende soorten if-zinnen/conditionals.

Zero Conditional

Het gaat hierbij om gewoontes en feiten.

Fill in the zero conditional:
If it ... (rain), the grass ... (get) wet.

First conditional

Gebruik: als het best waarschijnlijk is dat iets gaat gebeuren, nu of in de toekomst.

Vorm: if + present simple, will + infinitive (=hele werkwoord)

If Daniel leaves, we will be sad.

If you prepare properly, you will pass the test

What will you do if she _______ you?

2. doesn't call
3. wouldn't call
4. didn't call

If you _______ well tonight, you won't be tired tomorrow.

1. sleep

My boss will be angry if I ___(not finish) my work. (1st conditional)

If the athlete is unsuccessful then

Second conditional

Gebruik: als het gaat over iets wat niet zo waarschijnlijk is dat het ooit zal gebeuren/ iets in je fantasie, nu of in de toekomst.

Vorm: if + past simple, would + hele werkwoord

If I were you, I would do that

If  I knew Daniel was leaving us, I  would be   diappointed.

If you bought that car, you would not have to go on foot.

Second conditional

UITZONDERING: 

Als het werkwoord  in je "if-zin" is "to be", dan gebruik je  "I were" in plaats van "I was".

If I were there, I  would make my point.

If Dad drove me to school, I _______ late.

Third conditional

Gebruiken als  iets had gekund maar niet is gebeurd

Je kijkt terug. en stelt achteraf iets vast 

Vorm: if+ past perfect, would have + voltooid deelwoord (3e rij)

If I had seen you, I would have said hello.

If we won the lottery, we ..... (be) very happy

If they had studied it enough, they ............... (not be) amazed.

CONDITIONALS = 'If' sentences - 4 kinds:

• Zero- conditional  = facts - If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.
• Type 1 = First conditionaI = real or likely situations - If he comes first, he will win the medal.
• Type II = Second conditional =unlikely or hypothetical situations - If I won the lottery, I would go travelling around the world.
• Type III = Third Conditional = situations that cannot be changed - If I had studied for the test, I would have passed. (But I didn't study, so I didn't pass.)
