Een aangeplakte vraag gebruik je om erachter te komen of degene met wie je praat er net zo over denkt als jij.

Als de zin bevestigend is (+), is de aangeplakte vraag ontkennend (-).
Als de zin ontkennend is (-), is de aangeplakte vraag bevestigend (+).

He was late, wasn't he?
He wasn't late, was he?

Als er in de zin een vorm van 'to be' staat (am, are, is, was, were)
of een hulpwerkwoord (can, could, will, would, must, should) dan herhaal je deze in de aangeplakte vraag.

He could swim, couldn't he?
They can't drive a car, can they?

Als er in de zin GEEN vorm van 'to be' of een hulpwerkwoord staat, dan moet je een vorm van 'to do' gebruiken.
