There are a few horses left of what once was a very large herd = small number, emphasis on what there is!

=  emphasis on the fact that there is not a lot of time.

We had a little time to prepare for the test.

= emphasis on the fact that there still is time to prepare for the test albeit not a lot. 

Let's get something to eat. Are there restaurants here? Yes, there are _______ restaurants, but there's not _______ variety. What kind of food do you like? Well, I eat too _______  food so I'd prefer something different. Are there any British restaurants here? Yes, but very _______. There are only two, I think.
