STEP 1:

Which parts of the text can activate prior knowledge?

What is this text about?

What is the text about?

Scaffolding:

- Is the dog healthy?

- Is the dog happy? 

- Do you know all the words in the title?

So:

You activate prior knowledge by looking at the title and the pictures

This way your brain is tuned in to the right subject

STEP 2:

Read the question

Which words are most important? Can you translate those?

Write down on whiteboard what students say.

Answers should include:

- opvallend

- behandeling 

- bijzondere kleren 

- eigen mand 

- vertrouwde omgeving 

So:

You select important words so you can look for them in the text. 

This way, you don't have to read the whole text, which saves time!

STEP 3:

Find those important words in the text

So:

By looking for the important words in your text you know where your answer might be!

STEP 4:

Close reading & formulating an answer

Remember the question? Write down your answer!

Write down on whiteboard what students say.

Answers should include:

- eigen mand 

- vertrouwde omgeving

Unfamiliar words

What to do when words are unfamiliar?

Do you know the word: eccentric?

Try and figure out the meaning by reading the sentence.

Our goalkeeper is a bit eccentric. He never wears socks and has to kick the ball exactly thirteen times before we begin training.

What does 'eccentric'?

1. Normal
2. Slightly strange
3. Messy
4. Excited

What to do when words are unfamiliar?

Do you know the word: murky?

Read the sentence:

I didn't want to swim in the murky water. It looked all brown and I could not see to the bottom.

What does 'murky' mean?

1. troebel
2. helder
3. bodemloos
4. doorzichtig

How to handle:

1. Read the question and the first answer. Make sure you understand it.
2. Find the most important words
3. Find those important words in the text 
4. Does the answer fit? No? Cross it out. Yes? Great! (but check the others to be sure.
5. Read the second answer and do the whole thing again.

1. Read the question, don't read the answers. Make sure you understand it.

4. Formulate your own answer to the question
