Sentences

Er zijn drie verschillende soorten zinnen in het Engels wat betreft lengte. 

(dus niet vragende, ontkennende en bevestigende zinnen).

Simple

Simple sentence

Simple sentence: 

This is a very popular restaurant. 

I have worked here for 5 months. 

Eén volledige zin met één onderwerp en één persoonsvorm, geen voegwoord

Compound sentence

Hoofdzin + hoofdzin:

The most northern European capital is Reykjavik and the most southern capital is Valletta.

Twee zinnen samengevoegd d.m.v. een voegwoord. 
Je kunt hiervoor de volgende voegwoorden gebruiken:
and / but / or / so.

Complex sentence

Hoofdzin + bijzin:
We hung out with each other. We were in the same class.
>  We hung out with each other when we were in the same class.

De zin is uitgebreid met een voegwoord en een bijzin. 

Mogelijke voegwoorden zijn: although, after, because, before, that, when, which, who. 

Voegwoorden compound sentences

and = en --> toevoeging

For breakfast, I had some coffee and toast.

but = maar --> tegenstelling

It was a great movie but the ending was a bit sad. 

or = of --> keuze/opties

I might go to a restaurant  tonight or I'll stay in and order a pizza.

so = dus --> oorzaak/gevolg

I didn't do my homework so I had to think of an excuse.

Voegwoorden complex sentences

although = hoewel  --> tegenstelling

Although the test was difficult, I still passed. 

Because = omdat --> reden

I was late this morning because my alarm clock didn't go off.

Geven de volgorde van gebeurtenissen aan:

The concert had already started before we arrived at the venue. 

After dinner, we went to a rooftopbar for cocktails.

Betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden:  

which = voor dieren en dingen  

Do you see the cat which is lying on the roof?

who = voor mensen

I told you about the woman who lives next door.

when = voor tijden (toen, wanneer)

I was really happy when I got my diploma.

That man that is sitting next to Vince is my uncle.
