If-sentences: 1st conditional
  • De first conditional gebruik je om aan te geven: als aan deze voorwaarde wordt voldaan, is de kans heel groot dat dit zal gebeuren. Je noemt een conditional ook wel een if-zin.


  • Een conditional bestaat uit twee delen: de if-zin (eigenlijk een zinsdeel) en de hoofdzin. In de if-zin gebruik je de present simple; in de hoofdzin gebruik je will + hele werkwoord.

Examples:
If you spill your milk, you will ruin the carpet.
You will ruin the carpet, if you spill your milk.

If-sentences: 2nd conditional
  • De second conditional is een if-zin die je kunt gebruiken voor dingen waarvan het onwaarschijnlijk is dat ze gaan gebeuren.

  • In de if-zin gebruik je een past simple; in de hoofdzin gebruik je would + hele werkwoord.

  • Als je in een if-zin met de second conditional een vorm van to be gebruikt, gebruik je in alle gevallen – dus ook bij I, he, she en it – were in plaats van was.
examples:
  • If I won (win) the lottery, I would buy a new house for my parents.
  • If I were (to be) a millionaire, I would never have to work.
