Grammar > Reported speech
When do we use reported speech? Sometimes someone says a sentence, for example "I'm going to the cinema tonight". Later, maybe we want to tell someone else what the first person said. Here's how it works:

Slide 8 - Slide

Grammar > Reported speech
We use a reporting verb like 'say' or 'tell'. If this verb is in the present tense, it's easy. We just put 'she says' and then the sentence.

Direct speech: I like ice cream."
Reported speech:  She says she likes ice cream.

Slide 9 - Slide

Grammar > Reported speech
We use a reporting verb like 'say' or 'tell'. If this verb is in the present tense, it's easy. We just put 'she says' and then the sentence.

Direct speech: "I like ice cream."
Reported speech:  She says she likes ice cream.

We don't need to change the tense, though probably we do need to change the 'person' from 'I' to 'she', for example. We also may need to change words like 'my' and 'your'.

Slide 10 - Slide

Grammar > Reported speech
On the other hand, if the reporting verb is in the past tense, then usually we change the tenses in the reported speech:

Direct speech: "I like ice cream."

Reported speech: She said she liked ice cream.

Grammar > Reported speech
Other things that change in a sentence (time, place, etc.):

This > that                       tomorrow > the next day
Now > then                     ten minutes ago > ten minutes before
These > those                next week > the next/following week
Today > that day           last week > the week before
Here > there                   A week ago > a week before
Yesterday > the day before

Grammar > Reported speech
Exceptions:
1. Something is still true:
- He said he can't swim.
2. Something was just said/announced:
- 'That was Annie on the phone. She says she's not coming.'
3. 'Must' in the past tense (you can use 'must' or 'had to')
- He told me he must go to school / He told me he had to go to school.

Listening practice
At home we use Woots > let's take a look.

In class, we practice with CITO tests OR Woots (individually). Make sure to always check the homework in case you need to bring earphones with you to class.

For Monday (25th) you have to do a listening practice test in Woots. Because there's no class, you need to do it at home.
