What do you remember from last lesson?

Marshallplan

• After the war: Europa had lost a lot. 
• Communism is attractive to the poor. 
• Marshallplan: Give money to countries to rebuild their economies (and trade with the US).

Are the following cartoons pro or anti Marshallplan?

Blockade

• Berlin (seat of Allied Control Council) was divided into 4 zones.
• Stalin wanted the allies to leave Berlin.
• He started the Blockade of Berlin. 

Airplanes

• The US refused to give in: Berlin Airlift (=luchtbrug).
• All necessary things were brought by airplane. 

New countries

• Shortly after the Berlin Airlift two new countries were formed: 

1. May 1949: Federal Republic of Germany (= Bundes Republik Deutschland = BRD).
2. October 1949: German Democratic Republic (= Deutsche Demokratische Republik = DDR)

Containment

• The US tried to prevent communism from expanding: Containment Policy.

Two sides

• To become stronger each side founded a military pact.

1. NATO in 1949 (West)
2. Warsaw Pact 1955 (East)
