Wanneer gebruik je can / be able to?
Zowel "can" als "to be able to" gebruik je om te zeggen dat iemand iets kan. Maar wanneer gebruik je "can" en wanneer "be able to"?
"Kayla can swim very fast." "Yasser can play guitar really well." "Dave is able to come to the party tomorrow."

Can
- Gebruik je als je het hebt over vaardigheden, zoals zingen: "My sister can sing really well." - Als je wilt zeggen dat iemand iets niet kan, voeg je "not" toe: "My sister can't / cannot sing really well." - En bij vraagzinnen zet je "can" vooraan: "Can my sister sing really well?" - De verleden tijd van "can" = "could" (I could sing really well)

- Gebruik je als iemand in staat is iets te doen, zoals naar een feestje gaan. "I am able to come to your party." - Je gebruikt am / is / are (als het gaat over nu) - Of je gebruikt was / were (als het gaat over vroeger) "I was able to come to your party."

- Als je wilt benadrukken dat iets in het verleden een tijdje aan de gang was:

- was / were + werkwoord + ing
- I was eating, swimming, fighting, reading - He/she/it was eating, swimming, fighting, reading - We/They/You were eating, swimming, fighting, reading

- De Past Continuous & Past Simple worden vaak samen gebruikt. Je gebruikt de Past Simple om aan te geven dat iets gebeurde terwijl er al iets aan de gang was (Past Continuous)

Wanneer gebruik je tag questions?
- Als je wilt checken / vragen of iemand er net zo over denkt als jij. Tag questions zijn korte vragen die je hiervoor kunt gebruiken.
"You are 13 years old, aren't you?" "Dave was at the party, wasn't he?" "Ellen isn't your sister, is she?"

Hoe maak je een tag question?
- Als er een vorm van "be", "have" of een hulpwerkwoord (can, could, would, enz.) in de zin staat gebruik je dat woord. - Bevestigende zinnen krijgen een ontkennende tag question: "They are glad of your success, aren't they?" - Ontkennende zinnen krijgen een bevestigende tag question: "He wasn't at the race, was he?"

Wat als er een ander werkwoord staat?
- Als er een vorm van "be", "have" of hulpwerkwoord in de zin staat dan voeg je een vorm van "do" toe.
