Plural (= meervoud)

Most words in English end with an s when they become plural

book --> books

cake --> cakes

girl --> girls

Plural (= meervoud) - exceptions

• Singular (=enkelvoud) words that end with y, get ies in the plural form

lady --> ladies

• Singular words that end with a consonant (= medeklinker) + o, get oes in the plural form

tomato --> tomatoes

• Singular words that end with f or fe, get ves in the plural form

calf  --> calves

life --> lives

Plural (= meervoud) - exceptions

• Singular words that end with s, sh, x, ch or x, get es in the plural form

It would be to hard to pronounce the words without the e 

two buss, three foxs

fox --> foxes

bus --> buses

• There are also some irregular plurals

child --> children

tooth --> teeth
