Objective for today: to understand how to make the second conditional and when it is used 

What is wrong with the following sentences?

1. If the weather will not improve, we won't have a picnic.

2. The wedding was a magicly day.

3. The plane is flying at 9pm tonight.

First conditional

Is een voorwaard (bij zin - if) en het gevolg (hoofdzin)

If you go now, you will catch the train.

You will catch the train if you go now. 

First conditional

• What do we use the first conditional for?
• To describe a possible situation that will happen if a condition is met.

• What is an example of a first conditional?
• If I see her, I'll tell her.
• She'll be late if the train is delayed.

The first conditional is used to express....

1. something that has already happened in the past
2. something that is expected to happen in the future if a condition is met
3. something happening right at that very moment

 'Second Conditional'

Used to describe an imaginary situation or event, and its result

 if + past simple,  would + verb

If I had a car, I would drive all my friends around. 

Do I have a car?

if + past simple, would + infinitive (base form)

• For example:
• If I won the lottery, I would buy a big house.
  
• (I probably won't win the lottery)
  
• I would give him my number if he asked me.
  
• (He might not ask me)
  
• If I were you, I would say sorry straight away
• (Are you the other person?)
