Feedback essay writing
Good:
  • Lay-out
  • Thesis
  • Arguments
  • PEE
  • Grammar -> tenses (present perfect, passives ;-), modifiers (adjectives, adverbs, relative pronouns), noun phrases

Needs improvement:
  • Catchy introduction
  • Formal register
  • Avoiding repetitiveness
  • Grammar: article use (when not to use an article), concord (the boys' bikes), the genitive, adjectives with numbers (14-year-old girl), demonstrative pronouns this/that + plurals

Slide 6 - Slide

Grammar

No article  (the/a/an) when:
  • word is used in a general sense (milk is good for you; gold is scarce)
  • plural noun is used (women tend to be the better managers ;-)
  • names of buildings when referring to their use (she went to hospital, he went to church)
  • names of cities, streets , parks, personal names etc. (Buckingham Palace, on Orchard road)
  • names of seasons used in a general sense ( In spring, new-born lambs can be spotted in the fields.)
  • names of meals when referring to time meal is used (For breakfast I always have cereals.)
  • Most, next, last etc.

Grammar

The genitive -> 's:
  • persons singular + not ending in "s" (John's car, a man's job, the women's league)
  • time singular (last week's paper)
  • place singular (at the hairdresser's)
  • expressions singular (a stone's throw away)

The genitive -> '
  • persons plural (the girls' bikes)
  • time plural (a two hours' walk; NOTE: a two-hour walk)
  • place plural (at my friends')
  • names from antiquity (Socrates' philosophy; NOTE: Shakespeare's novels)
  • family names ending in "s" -> The Browns' home;

Slide 8 - Slide

Grammar

Genitive "Of":
  • Geographical names (The city of Athens; The province of Ontario)
  • Amounts (ten grams of salt)
  • Things (the name of the school, the top of the building)

If things have a connection to people we also use the s-genitive (possessive).
Germany's economy = the ecomony of Germany

Grammar

Concord (nouns and adjectives)
  • The boys' car vs the boys' cars -> what is the difference?
  • Boys' and girls' bicycles
