United Nations 
- New Type of League of Nations

- Security Council consists of 15 members and can make quick decisions on conflicts. U.S., Soviet Union, United Kingdom, France and China are permanent members

- Other 10 countries change every so often.
1948: Universal Declaration of Human Rights:
Freedom of speech and religion and protection from lack of food, fuel  and against all fear

Courts for Japanese and German war criminals 
Starting in 1943, the Allies decided that Nazi leaders should be tried for their deeds. War crimes had never been tried by international judges before and became a model for war criminals later.
A war crimes tribunal was set up in Nuremberg and 11 people were given the death penalty.
This also happened in Tokyo between 1946 and 1948 and 7 were given the death penalty
NSB'ers such as Anton Mussert received the death penalty by firing squad

Commemoration
On May 4 each year, the National Remembrance Day service for the warvictims takes place on Dam Square.

All civilians and military who died during WWII and afterwards, war situations and peace operations.
Liberation Day on 5 May: attention to freedom, democracy and human rights
