The Romans first came to Britain in 55 BC when Julius Caesar led two short expeditions to the Kent coast. However, the Romans didn't invade Britain in earnest until AD 43, when Emperor Claudius ordered a large army to land in Kent. The Romans then gradually expanded their control over much of what is now England and Wales, and even into Scotland. Britain remained part of the Roman Empire until the early 5th century.
