An altarpiece is a work of art 

(such as a painting or a sculpture) 

that is placed near an altar 

(usually in a Christian church).

Altarpieces generally deal with religious subjects or themes.

Until 1880, artists depicted what they saw in a realistic way.

Shapes, colors, etc. were based on visible reality.

Topics and themes included; mythological, biblical and other commonly known stories (such as famous historic battles etc).

The period from 1880 to 1980 is a ground breaking period in art history . Realism was no longer the norm, and the familiar subjects and themes from before 1880 were no longer the only stories told.

Sometimes a work of art consisted only of shapes, lines and/or colors. We call that abstract art.

Which materials and which visual elements have been used?

Light, colour, form, shapes, space and composition are the building blocks of a painting - the visual elements. 

If you learn to recognise these, you will learn more about the structure of a painting.

The visual elements should be seen as the ingredients of a work of art; elements mean 'parts of', in this case of a work of art.
