An altarpiece is an artwork (like a painting, sculpture or reliëf) that is made for, and placed at, an altar (usually in a Christian church).

Altarpieces usually represent a religious subject or theme.

Up until 1880, artists portrayed what they were seeing in a realistic manner.

Shapes, colors etc were all based on reality.

Themes and subjects were based on mythological, biblical or other widely known stories.

From 1880 up until 1980, artists start to reject the strictly realistic style and common themes that were customary before.

Sometimes an artwork would only consist of shapes, lines and/or color.

Divide yourself into groups of 3-4.

Look closely at the image and answer the questions on the answersheet. 

Look up more examples of altarpieces.

Try to find one from each time period: before 1880, up to 1980, and contemporary (modern).
