They had bought tickets in advance. (to buy) 

Past Perfect

De Past Perfect geeft aan dat er iets plaats vond in het verleden (PP) voor dat er iets anders plaats vond in het verleden (PS).

After we had spoken, he gave me the company's number.

Before we entered, we had knocked serveral times.
