In 1585 the Spanish conquered Antwerp. 
Antwerp was one of the most important trade cities. After the Spanish came, most of the wealthy merchants left for Amsterdam.
The waterway were blocked and trade moved to Amsterdam.

Amsterdam was an important city for the Baltic trade. After the losing the city of Antwerp to the Spanish Amsterdam grew even more, both in size and in importance.

  • Founded in 1602.
  • To control prices of the spices, and to make it more safe to travel.
  • They were managed by the "lords seventeen".
  • The States Genaral gave the VOC privileges. Rights only the VOC had like:
  • Monopoly on trade in Asia.
  • Wage war against other countries.
  • Make diplomatic deals.
  • establish colonies.

  • They often clashed with Spanish ships, and took their silver.
