- Britain began colonisation and settling in 1788.

Settlement

- Britain wanted to clean up their prisons because their felons couldn't be sent to the USA.

- They also wanted economical profit.

- First Fleet had 730 felons and about 250 free people.

- in 1830 about 58 000 felons (50 000 men) had come. They had to work hard in a new country.

Aboriginals

- before 1788 there were more than 1 million Aboriginals. 

- 1861 > 180,000 and 1901 > 95,000

- Many Europeans wanted the Aboriginals to die out.

Stolen generations

- Europeans wanted to stop the Aboriginal culture.

- They stole Aboriginal children and forced them to live Christian lives.

- This resulted in the stolen generations.
