Past simple - When to use:
1. a finished action in the past. You know when it happened
2.  Actions which follow each other in a story
3. A past situation or habit

1. We met in 1987
2. Mary walked into the room and stopped. She listened carefully.
3. As a child, I used to play with barbies.

Past Continuous

Often combined with the Past Simple. Usually the PC refers to longer, 'background' activities, whilst the PS refers to shorter actions.

Use

1. Duration - to express an activity in progress before, and probably after, a particular time in the past
2. To indicate something took long, or at least it felt that way.
3. To express an interrupted past activity or habit
4. Scene descriptions in a story.
