He did not want to give service to Philip III.
Philip tried to take the land of Edward in France.
Edward needed that land because of the trading routes.

People learned to be proud at their countries. The French were proud of France and teh English were proud of England. You call this pride

France became a state that was ruled from one central place, it's capital Paris.
