Proverbs zijn spreekwoorden / gezegdes. Wat zijn dat eigenlijk?

Spreekwoorden / gezegden
Dit zijn uitdrukkingen met een figuurlijke betekenis. Veel spreekwoorden en gezegden bevatten ook beeldspraak.
Een voorbeeld van een spreekwoord is: "na regen komt zonneschijn".
Een voorbeeld van een gezegde is: "een nieuwsgierig aagje".

De uitdrukkingen zijn niet letterlijk bedoeld. Je moet ze daarom ook niet op die manier opvatten. Met onderstaande voorbeelden wordt het verschil tussen letterlijk en figuurlijk verduidelijkt:

De aap komt uit de mouw!
Letterlijk: er komt een aapje uit een mouw gekropen.
Figuurlijk: het wordt duidelijk hoe iets zit.
