I am = ik ben (Let op: I schrijf je altijd met een hoofdletter!)

you are = jij bent

she is = zij is

he is = hij is

it is = het is (voor dieren, gebeurtenissen en dingen)

we are = wij zijn

you are = jullie zijn

they are = zij zijn

Vormen van 'to be'

In de tegenwoordige tijd heb je drie vormen van 'to be', namelijk:

am, are & is

Voorbeelden:

I am the best                                   He is the best                   You are the best

Am hoort bij	I
Are hoort bij	you, we, they & you
Is hoort bij	he, she & it

Wanneer gebruik je het werkwoord 'to be'?

Het werkwoord 'to be' gebruiken we bij:

Persoonlijke voornaamwoorden

Voorbeelden:

We are family                      She is my sister                 It is broken

Zelfstandige naamwoorden

Voorbeelden:

John is my best friend                The cat is tired                     The car is very fast

Het werkwoord 'to be' afkorten

Je kunt het werkwoord 'to be' ook afkorten.

I am the best                 --> I'm the best

You are the best          --> You're the best

She is the best             --> She's the best

Dit kan alleen bij persoonlijke voornaamwoorden

Vragen maken met to be

Bij vragen komt de vorm van to be vooraan in de zin te staan.

Voorbeeld:

Is Jack in the kitchen?

Are they the best students in class?

...... I the only one who brought a book?

Ontkenningen met 'to be' afkorten

Ontkenningen met 'is not' en 'are not' kan je ook afkorten.

Voorbeelden:

They are not the best            --> They aren't the best

She is not the best                 --> She isn't the best

Bij 'am not' kan dat niet!
