Present Continuous
Present Simple
Use
We use the present continuous to talk about:
  • Actions that are happening now, or around now.
  • Temporary situations.
  • Changing or developing situations.
  • Irritating habits, often with always.



Use
We use the present simple to talk about:
  • Habits and everyday routines.
  • Facts and general truths
  • States. Some verbs that describe states are believe, hate, have, know, like etc.



 

Signal words:
Always, every day, often, regularly, usually, sometimes, hardly ever, never.





 

Signal words:
Right now, at the moment, nowadays, today.

Form
(+) is / are + -ing form
(-) isn't / aren't + -ing form
(?) is / are + subject + -ing form


Examples
(+) I'm riding my bike to school.
(+) They are always complaining.
(-) Steven is not working right now.
(?) Are you looking for something to eat?
Form
(+) base form of verb (+-s / -es for he/she/it)
(-) don't / doesn't + infinitive
(?) do / does + subject + infinitive


Examples
(+) I drink a cup of coffee every day.
(+) she plays football every Saturday.
(-) She doesn't work at McDonalds.
