Definition modal verbs
  • Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express possibility, necessity, permission, or ability
  • They are used to modify the meaning of other verbs by expressing modality (= the way or mode in which something exists or is done). 
  • Examples of modal verbs include: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would.

  • Je gebruikt 'all, every, none' bij drie of meer personen, dieren of dingen.

Example: 
  • The suspect admitted to all charges.
  • A criminal burgled nearly every house in the street.
  • None of the missing jewels were recovered.

Each, every = elke, iedere
  • Je gebruikt 'each' om nadruk te leggen op individuele dingen. 

  • Je gebruikt 'every' om nadruk te leggen op het geheel.
Example: 
  • He held a glass in each hand.
  • There was police on every corner.

Either = een van beide

Either betekent 'een van beide(n)' óf 'elk van beide(n)' als het om (meestal) twee personen, dieren of dingen gaat. Het werkwoord staat dan in het enkelvoud.

Either ... or betekent "of ... of".
Example: You can choose either coffee or tea.
(Je kunt koffie of thee kiezen.)

Neither = Geen van beide
Neither betekent 'geen van beide(n)' als het om twee personen, dieren of dingen gaat. Het werkwoord staat dan in het enkelvoud.




Example 1: The cat and the dog are in the garden. Neither of them likes to stay inside.
(De kat en de hond zijn in de tuin. Ze vinden het geen van beide leuk om binnen te blijven.)

Example 2: Neither ... nor betekent noch ... noch.
Neither the dog nor the cat wanted to play outside.
(Noch de hond, noch de kat wilde buiten spelen.)
