  • Remember: I can label the skull, spine (backbone), rib cage and limbs correctly on a simple diagram of the human skeleton.
  • Understand: I can explain in my own words what the main functions of the spine and the intervertebral discs are, in at least three clear sentences.
  • Understand: I can describe the double S-shape of the spine and explain why this shape is important for good posture and shock absorption, using one example.
  • Apply: I can look at someone’s sitting or standing position and give at least three simple instructions to improve their posture.

Slide 10 - Drag question

Why have a skeleton?

Slide 11 - Mind map

Functions
The skeleton performs 4 functions:
  1. Rigidity and sturdiness
  2. Makes movement possible
  3. Protects organs
  4. Give shape to the body
Some bones contain bone marrow.
The bone marrow makes the cells of your blood
5?
Though it needs the muscles to do this!
But muscles need the bone to pull on

Posture
  • Arises at young age
  • When grown up, hard/impossible to change
  • What is good posture?
Different postures

Slide 15 - Slide

The spinal column
Good posture, helps prevent (back) pain
The spine has 2 mechanisms that help
  • Double-S-shape
  • Invertebral discs
Backmuscles have a big job in keeping this shape.
Works as a shock absorber
Can move slightly allowing you to bend your back.
also helps absorb shocks.

Invertebral disc = anulus fibrosus
gelatinous core = nucleus pulposus
