How do you make the present perfect (how do you use the verbs)?

have/has + voltooid deelwoord
have = I, you, we, you they
has = he, she, it
Voltooid deelwoord:
1. regelmatig werkwoord + ed > I have worked
2. onregelmatig werkwoord 3e vorm > I have been
Check irregular verbs!

She has been to London twice.
We have walked for 2 hours now.

Deze zinnen bevatten altijd een vorm van hebben + het tweede werkwoord is een voltooid deelwoord.

1. iets is in het verleden begonnen en is nu nog aan de gang.
2. praten over ervaringen.
3. iets is in het verleden gebeurd en je merkt nu nog het resultaat.

Past simple
De past simple consists of 1 verb. You put this verb in the past tense.
There are two ways to do so:
1. verb + ed > worked
2. irregular verbs, 2nd row in the list of irregular verbs

When do you use the past simple?
- Something has happened in the past and it is clear it is over.


Signal words (there are lots, these are just examples):
last year, yesterday, in 2010, an hour ago.

Difference present perfect and past simple


So what's the difference?
The past simple will show you the action in the sentence is finished and in the past.
With the present perfect the action is still going on, or there is a link with something in the past.

Signal words:

Present perfect: already, for, since, how long.
Past simple: last year, yesterday, in 2010, an hour ago.

1. Is it happening now, at the moment?
Yes: present perfect - no: go to step 2
2. Is it about experiences that happened until now?
Yes: present perfect - no: go to step 3.
3. Can you notice the effect of the action now?
Yes: present perfect - No: past simple.
