De past simple consists of 1 verb. You put this verb in the past tense. There are two ways to do so: 1. verb + ed > worked 2. irregular verbs, 2nd row in the list of irregular verbs

When do you use the past simple? - Something has happened in the past and it is clear it is over.
Signal words (there are lots, these are just examples): last year, yesterday, in 2010, an hour ago.

Difference present perfect and past simple
So what's the difference? The past simple will show you the action in the sentence is finished and in the past. With the present perfect the action is still going on, or there is a link with something in the past.

Present perfect: already, for, since, how long. Past simple: last year, yesterday, in 2010, an hour ago.
