WEATHER is an event like a storm or a hot day that happens over a few days or week.

CLIMATE is the type of weather that usually happens in a place, measured over 30 years of more.

Look at the following 2 slides and discuss what sort of weather those places have.

What differences did you spot in the sort of weather shown in the two slides?
If a particular type of WEATHER happens in a place for at least 30 years, then it is called the CLIMATE.

The world is split into regions that have similar climates.

These are called Climate Zones.

The POLAR regions are found at the top and bottom of the world.
The POLAR regions do not get much sun so the climate there is very cold with lots of snow and ice.

The Arctic is in the POLAR region with countries like Alaska, Greenland and Iceland which have very cold weather.
At the South Pole, Antarctica is also in the POLAR zone.  It is so cold that there are no countries there for people to live in, only research stations.

The TEMPERATE region has mild weather.  It has sunny weather in the Summer and cold weather in the Winter but the weather is not too extreme.

We live in the TEMPERATE zone. The UK has a mild climate.

The TROPICAL zone is all around the Equator.
The Equator is the imaginary line around the middle of the Earth.  
It is the part where the Earth sticks out the most and gets more sunshine.

The TROPICAL region has hot weather with lots of rain.
Many countries are in the TROPICAL region.
Countries like:
Brazil, Jamaica, India, Cuba, Singapore & Fiji.

The SUBTROPICAL zones are between the TEMPERATE & TROPICAL regions.
Countries in the SUBTROPICAL zones have cool winters and hot summers but the climate is not as hot as in the TROPICAL regions.
