Second conditional

Gebruik: als het gaat over iets wat niet zo waarschijnlijk is dat het ooit zal gebeuren/ iets iets je fantasie, nu of in de toekomst.

Vorm: if + past simple, would/might/could + hele werkwoord

If  I knew Daniel was leaving us, I would be so sad!

If you didn't prepare properly, you could never pass the test!

If sentences

wanneer er aan een bepaalde voorwaarde wordt voldaan, 

is er een bepaald gevolg

bestaat uit 2 delen:

bijzin met voorwaarde (begint met if)

hoofdzin met gevolg

If sentences for unlikely situations

Bijzin: if + past simple

Hoofdzin: would (not) + hele ww 

vb. If I knew where he lived, I would visit him.

I would eat sushi every day if I lived in Japan.

2. Met if maak je voorwaardelijke zinnen. Dat is op zich niet zo moeilijk; dat doen we in het Nederlands ook.
   
3. Wat het zo lastig maakt is de mengelmoes van Engelse tijden die in zo'n zin worden gebruikt. Daardoor krijgen die zinnen steeds een net wat andere betekenis.

2. The house smells good if my mom bakes a cake.

4. The house would smell good if my mom bakes a cake.
