Today's goal

• I can explain when and how to use 

the Past Simple and Present Perfect.

• I can explain the differences between these two tenses

PRESENT PERFECT / PAST SIMPLE

Past simple:

- It happened in the past

- You know when it happened

- It's finished

Present perfect:

- It happened in the past but you don't know when!!

- It is still going on

- It  has consequences/effect in the present, now

- Those are experiences

PAST SIMPLE

Keywords/Signal words:

when, ago, last,  a day/date, yesterday, In the year

regular verbs: ww + -ed  

For instance: walked, talked, looked, etc. 

irregular verbs: 2e rijtje onregelmatige werkwoorden 

E.g.: bought, flew, sang, put etc.

PAST SIMPLE

I fell off my bike yesterday.

He was a singer a decade ago

They walked in the forest last weekend.

PRESENT PERFECT

Keywords/Signal words: 

mnemonic = FYNE JASSS

For, Yet, Never, Ever, Just, Already, Since, So far, Still

Usage: have/has + past participle  (+ -ed for regular verbs)

have/has + past participle = 3rd row irregular verbs (back of your book)

PRESENT PERFECT

I have become a teacher in 2008. (still ongoing)

He has been to London once. (experience, you don't know when)

He has cleaned his car, it is shiny! (nu nog effect).

1. It's finished and you know when
2. It's finished and you don't know when
3. Something that is still going on
4. Something is going on now

FORM
Past simple

1. had + voltooid deelwoord
2. Have/has + voltooid deelwoord
3. ww + ed OR own form irregular verbs
4. ww + ing

Present Perfect

1. You know when it happened.
2. Something started in the past and is still going on.
3. Something that is happening now.
