Degrees of comparison
In het Nederlands noemen we degrees of comparison de trappen van vergelijking. Om mensen, dieren of dingen met elkaar te vergelijken, gebruiken we bijvoeglijke naamwoorden. 

Wat is een bijvoeglijk naamwoord?
Een woord dat iets zegt over een zelfstandig naamwoord. Bijvoorbeeld: old, funny, small or fast.

Degrees of comparison
De trappen van vergelijking kent drie vormen: 
  • Positive: This apple is small               
  • Comparative: This apple is smaller than that apple.    
     Je maakt een comparative door -er toe te voegen.        
  • Superlative: This apple is the smallest.
     Je maakt een superlative door -est toe te voegen.

Uitzonderingen
  1. Woorden die eindigen op -y krijgen -ier of -iest.
    happy - happier - happiest
  2. Woorden die eindigen op -e krijgen -r of -st.
    nice - nicer - nicest 
  3. Bij woorden die eindigen op een korte klinker en een medeklinker, moet je de medeklinker verdubbelen.
    big - bigger - biggest

Uitzonderingen
Bij woorden met drie of meer lettergrepen en woorden die eindigen op -ful gebruik je more (comparative) en most (superlative). 

Expensive (ex-pen-sive)
That car is more expensive. That car is the most expensive. 

Careful 
You should be more careful. He is the most careful driver.

Onregelmatige naamwoorden
Sommige bijvoeglijke naamwoorden zijn onregelmatig. De comparative en superlative van deze woorden moet je uit je hoofd leren. De lijst hiervoor kun je vinden op bladzijde x?
