They speak Dutch in Suriname!
The country used to be a Dutch colony. From 1667 to 1975, the Dutch were in charge there, so the people had to learn Dutch.
When Suriname became independent in 1975, Dutch remained the official language because most people already knew it. Pretty strange, right?
But now it’s just kind of the official language, while Sranantongo is the everyday language everyone uses.

In Guyana, English is spoken because the country was once a British colony. Guyana was known as "British Guiana" until it gained independence in 1966.
During colonial times, the British introduced English as the official language, and it has remained the primary language ever since, even after independence.
So, although the country is located in South America, it has English as its official language due to its history with Britain.

Slide 5 - Quiz

'Fawaka' is an informal greeting in Sranantongo, the Creole language spoken in Suriname. It means something like "How are you?" or "What's up?" and is used to ask someone how they are doing. It is similar to other informal greetings like "Hi" or "Hello" in Dutch. It can also serve as a general way to catch someone's attention or start a conversation.

Sranantongo is a Creole language primarily spoken in Suriname. It is the language most people there use to communicate with each other, regardless of their background. While Dutch is the official language, most Surinamese speak Sranantongo as their first or second language, especially when conversing in everyday life.

Slide 6 - Quiz

'Mba’éichapa pyhareve' is Guaraní for 'Good morning'.
Guaraní is an indigenous language primarily spoken in Paraguay. It is one of the official languages there, alongside Spanish. Many people in Paraguay speak both Guaraní and Spanish.
Guaraní is also spoken in various other parts of South America. It has a rich culture and history and is often used in music and poetry.

Pronunciation:
Mba’éichapa pyhareve should be pronounced as follows:
Mba’éichapa:

- "Mba" is pronounced as "m-bah," where the "m" and "b" blend closely.
- "é" sounds like the "e" in "bed."
- "cha" sounds like "tsja," similar to "chat."
- "pa" sounds like "pah."
Pyhareve:
- "Py" is pronounced like "pwi," with a sound between "pwi" and "pwee."
- "ha" sounds like "ha" in "hard."
- "re" sounds like the "re" in "red," but shorter.
- "ve" sounds like "veh," as in "very," but shorter.

When combined, it sounds like:
