Introduction to There is and There are

' There is' is used to singular (enkelvoud) nouns

'There are' is used for plural (meervoud) nouns 

There is a park. There are many shops.

Singular examples

There is a library on Main Street

There is a school nearby.

Plural examples 

There are three cafes in our area.

There are several parks around there.

Spot the difference.

Look at the picture, describe it using 'there is' and 'there are'.

Avoid the mistake of using 'there is' instead of 'there are'.

Write three sentences about your neighbourhood using 'there is' and 'there are'.
