  • Intake test: Thursday 1 February 2024 (8th & 9th per.)
  • Have the courtesy to notify your subject teacher(s)!
  • Assemble quietly outside 314 at 2.30pm
  • Intake test is not binding!
  • Results by email on 1 March
  • Register for the course as soon as possible after 1 March

  • Writing tasks
Other selection criteria:
  • English teacher's recommendation &  English mark
  • mid-year skills tests results (Reading and Listening)
  • overall performance and work attitude in general

Intake test parts 1-4: Reading and Use of English
Part 1 - Multiple Choice Cloze
  • You have to choose the correct word from four similar given words. This is a test of your vocabulary knowledge and your ability to use the correct word (noun, verb, adjective) depending on context.
Example question:
0. Don't wash that sweater in hot water, ______  it will shrink.
a. unless   b. if   c. moreover   d. otherwise
  •  Don't wash that sweater in hot water, otherwise it will shrink.

Part 2 - Open Cloze
  • Here you use one word to fill each space in a short text. The required words are usually grammatical, such as pronouns, articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs and so on.
Example question:

  • Here you have to use a root such as 'ABLE' and create an appropriate word (disable, unable, ability) to fill the gap in a text.

Example question:

Part 4 - Key Word Transformations
  • The final part of the Use of English paper is Key Word Transformations. A sentence is followed by a key word and a second sentence has a gap in it. You have to use the key word to complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the first sentence.

Example Question:
0. I regret not speaking to Marge sooner.
had
I wish ______________________________ sooner.
  • I wish I had spoken to Marge sooner

  • The first of the reading parts in the Reading and Use of English paper in the intake test is the multiple choice reading comprehension section where you must choose the correct answer out of four possible answers.

Part 6 -  Reading: Gapped Text
  • In this part of the Reading and Use of English paper, known as 'Gapped Text', you need to put back paragraphs that have been removed from a text. This section will test your understanding of coherence, cohesion, text structure and global meaning.

Part 7 - Reading: Multiple Matching
  • The final part of the Reading and Use of English paper is Multiple Matching. In this section, you must match questions or prompts to parts of a single text or individual smaller texts that follow. This tests your ability to understand specific detail and author attitude and opinion.

Intake test part 8: writing tasks
There are three writing tasks in part 8 of the CPE intake test.
Part 1:
  • An informal email
Part 2:
  • Describing a place (combining sentences to make more complex sentences)
Part 3:
  • Essay : write a few paragraphs about why you think you are eligible to do the two-year CPE course.

  • Read the task carefully
  • Put yourself in the shoes of the writer
  • Always remember your target reader and use appropriate register
  • Use clear paragraphs - leave a blank line between each one
  • Use appropriate linking words - In fact, However, What 's more, etc.
  • ALWAYS check your spelling and punctuation!

Describing a place
  • Read the task carefully and use all of the information
  • Always remember your target reader and use appropriate register
  • Use clear paragraphs - leave a blank line between each one
  • Link the sentences using appropriate relative pronouns - who, which, that, whose, where etc. and linking words - In fact, However, What 's more, etc.
  • This task tests your ability to combine sentences to make more complex sentences
  • ALWAYS check your spelling and punctuation!

Mini Essay (about 150- 250 words)
  • Write a few paragraphs to a teacher using formal English. Read and answer the task fully. 
  • Use clear paragraphs - each paragraph has a function! 
- Introduction: introduces the topic and makes the main statement
- Body: each body paragraph makes a statement and explains it, sometimes using an example or anecdote.  (Each paragraph serves to discuss one of the questions in the task)
- Conclusion: summarises your statements and  reasons in different words.
  • Link your sentences using appropriate relative pronouns - who, which, that, whose, where etc. and linking words - In fact, However, What 's more, etc. 
  • This tests your ability to organise your ideas into a coherent text without repeating yourself. 
  • ALWAYS edit your work - check your word choice, grammar, spelling and punctuation!
