Which rythm can be found in Sonnet 18 and why?

iambic pentameter 

pentameter: a line of 10 syllables. However, each line can be divided in 5 segments and these are called feet (penta = Greek )

Shall I / compare / thee to / a sum/ mer's day/

 iamb: there are five iambs of two syllables in every line of Sonnet 18. The second syllable is always stressed. compare = an iambic word

Can you give me two examples of stylistic devices in sonnet 18?  

stylistic devices

• metaphor = word that refers to something else 
• simile = comparison/as/like
• personification = ascribing human traits to an object 
• oxymoron = combination words with opposite meanings

Group 2 

Can you give me two examples of sound techniques in sonnet 18?  

sound techniques 

• consonance = words with same consonant sound
• assonance = words with same vowel sound.
  
• alliteration = specific type of consonance, words with the same first consonant sound
  
• onomatopoeia = words that sound like their meaning 

Note that these are sound techniques and therefore may not be reflected in spelling, i.e. “do you like blue” is also considered assonance!!

1. Shakespeare begins the poem with a rhetorical question (one that is asked for effect, rather than to obtain an answer). How does he answer his own question? 
2.  Why might a man compare his lover to a summer's day?
3. What flaws in summer's beauty are identified in lines 3-6
4.  What is the eye of heaven a metaphor for?
5. What does his (line 6) refer back to?

Read Sonnet 130 on p. 29, discuss the questions together and answer them in your notes. Apply what we discussed to these questions.
