Can, could, may, might, to be able to, to be allowed to

1. (zou) kunnen - iets is mogelijk
2. je hebt het vermogen/de vaardigheid/mogelijkheid om iets te doen
3. (zou) mogen - je hebt toestemming om iets te doen
4. je stelt een beleefde vraag

1.(zou) kunnen 

Om te zeggen dat iets mogelijk is:

• can / can't       (waarschijnlijk)               
  
• could / couldn't   (minder waarschijnlijk)

2. vermogen/vaardigheid/mogelijkheid

Als je iets kunt doen omdat je het vermogen/vaardigheid hiervoor hebt:

• can                         (present simple)
  
• could                     (iets wat je mogelijk zou kunnen)

                                        (past simple van  can)

• to be able to       (alle werkwoordstijden): vooral als je can of could niet kunt gebruike                                                                                                           bijvoorbeeld in de future met will:

vb: I can't walk the dog today (present simple)

       I won't be able to walk the dog tomorrow ( future)

3. (zou)mogen

Om aan te geven dat je iets van iemand mag:

• can                             (present simple)
  
• could                         (is verleden tijd van can)
  
• to be allowed to.  (alle werkwoordstijden): vooral als je  can of could niet kunt gebruiken
                                                                                            bijvoorbeeld  in de future met will: 

vb: I can't open the window. (present simple)  

      You won't be allowed to open the window. ( future)

4. je stelt een beleefde vraag

Vaak in combinatie met please.
