V4 - Unit 4: Future tenses

Future tenses 

This aim of this lesson is to help you understand and use the future tenses.

There are 3 ways in this unit to talk about the future:

• future continuous
• future perfect
• future perfect continuous

Future continuous

will + be + verb & -ing:     Tom will have left by the time you read his message.

• een actie die in de toekomst afspeelt een tijdje aan de gang zal zijn: This time next week I will be skiing in Austria.
• wanneer we denken dat iets aan de gang is op het moment van spreken: Elizabeth will be having dinner now, so don't bother calling her.
• om beleefd te vragen naar informatie over de toekomst: Will Amy be joining us for dinner tomorrow?

Future continuous

Een actie/handeling die in de toekomst een tijdje aan de gang zal zijn. Denk aan de andere continuous tijden, ook daar gaat het er specifiek om dat iets een tijdje aan de gang is (I am reading a book right now / I was reading a book when my brother called)

Handige zin om te onthouden:

- Today, I will be studying for my English test all afternoon.

Future perfect

will + have + past participle (worked/given): Hurry up, or the concert will have started by the time we get there.

Deze tijd verwijst naar een moment in de toekomst waar iets met zekerheid gebeurd zal zijn, maar op dit moment is dat nog niet zo. 

Oftewel, het gaat hier om een actie/handeling die in de toekomst afgerond is (maar nu dus nog niet). Er staat meestal een tijdsaanduiding bij.

• The teachers will have marked the exams by next week.
• I will have finished this book by the end of the day.

Future perfect

Deze tijd gebruik je wanneer iets in de toekomst afgerond zal voor een bepaald tijdstip.

Er staat dus een tijdsbepaling bij. 

De onderstaande zin is handig om te onthouden:

- By this time next week I will have studied for my English test.

Future perfect continuous

will + have + been + verb & -ing:  Next year September, I will have been working at this school for 4 years.

Deze tijd gebruik je om aan te geven dat een actie/handeling tot een specifiek tijdstip in de toekomst zal duren (en daarna soms afgerond is). Hierbij leg je de nadruk op lengte van de handeling.

- By the end of this school year you will have studying English for 4 years.

- They will have been screaming for hours before Harry Styles starts the concert.

Future perfect continuous

Het belangrijkste is om te weten dat net als bij andere continuous tijden, de duur van de actie/handeling belangrijk is. Er zal dus ook een tijdsbepaling bij staan die dit aangeeft. 

De onderstaande zin is handig om te onthouden:

- I will have been studying for my English test for 4 hours when I take a break.

EXTRA INFO:

Future Perfect Simple - nadruk op het resultaat/einde

Next Friday I will have finished building the house.

Future Perfect Continuous - nadruk op de actie/handeling

By this time next Friday I will have been building for three weeks!

By time I'm 65 years old I ..... (stop) working.

1. will be stopping
2. will have stopped

This time next week, we ..... (sit) on a beach in the Maldives drinking cocktails.

1. will be sitting
2. will have sat

There's no point phoning them now as they .... (watch) the final.

1. will be watching
2. will have watched
3. will have been watching

I bet there will some great food at the party. Dad ..... (cook) all day for this.

1. will be cooking
2. will have cooked
3. will have been cooking

Next week we ...... (know) each other for 10 years! We should celebrate.

1. will be knowing
2. will have known
3. will have been knowing
