Past Simple vs Past Continuous
Wat weet je hier nog van?

Past simple
Rule: basisvorm ww+ed (or irregular verb = know by heart!)
Use: actions in the past (no link to present)
Negative: ow + didn't/doesn't + ww
Question: Did + ow + ww
"I went to Canada last year."
"She didn't read that book."
"Did they travel to London in 2017?"

Past continuous
Rule: was/were ww+ing
Use: action that went on for a longer time in the past.
Negative: ow + wasn't/weren't + ww+ing
Question: Was/Were + ow + ww+ing
"It was raining that day..."
"They weren't talking to each other."
"Were you working at that time?"

Past simple & Past continuous
Komen vaak samen in één zin voor, als je wil beschrijven dat één handeling bezig was toen er opeens nog iets anders gebeurde.

  • De handeling die bezig was (een tijdje duurde) is de past continuous.
  • De handeling die plotseling erbij komt (kortere handeling) is de past simple.

Modal Verbs
Can, could, should, have to

Modal Verbs
Can, could, should, have to = Modal verbs (hulpwerkwoorden)
  • in combinatie met een ander werkwoord: 
       modal verb + verb without to 
       (e.g. can swim, could sing, have to try)

  • geven de 'mood' van de zin aan: 
       mogelijkheid, waarschijnlijkheid, noodzaak v/e boodschap

Modal Verbs
Use can (kunnen) to talk about:
  • what people, animals, things can do; ability (vaardigheid)
  • permission (toestemming)
Use could (zou kunnen) to talk about:
  • what people, animals, things could do in the past
  • Formally asking for permission (toestemming)
  • what is possible (hypothetisch)
can+not = cannot

Use should (zou moeten) to talk about:
  • advice

Use have to (moeten) to talk about:
  • obligations (verplichtingen)
do/does not + have to = no obligation, there is a choice
