Before reading: 


  • Check the title
  • Check the images
  • Read the headline and paragraph heades
  • Read the questions so you know what is expected from you.

Ways of reading: Skimmen 
  • Read the introduction
  • Read the first and last sentence of a paragraph
  • Underline important words in those bits (nouns, names, dates, linking words)

Read the whole text, word for word

Als je skimmen en scannen goed uitvoert, kun je intensief lezen achterwege laten.

Multiple choice questions: 
  1. First read the questions and cover the answers.
  2. Then read the text that belongs to the question
  3. First think what your answer could be.
  4. Then read the answers
  5. Choose the answers that matches the one you thought of.

Multiple choice questions: 
  • Are in chronoligical order: you only need to read the bit that is mentioned in the question. The answer is usually in one of the sentences.
  • There's usually one or two answers that make no sense at all. Filter them out as soon as possible.

Open questions:
  • Check in which language you need to answer (NL of Eng.)
  • Check how many words you are allowed to use

Unknown words
  • Read around them and try to find out what they mean from context.
  • Does it look like a word in Dutch or another language that may mean the same?
  • Last resort: dictionary (takes up a lot of time!)

Linking words/signal words
  • Words that point out connections within a sentence
  • They enlarge your vocabulary and knowledge of texts
