Twee situaties....

Stel je voor: je doet mee met een loterij. Je zit voor de TV en je bedenkt wat je met het geld zal doen als je de loterij wint. 

A. "If I win the lottery, I will donate some money to a charity." (likely)

Naast je zit je moeder die niet meedoet met de loterij. Diegene heeft ook geen lot gekocht. zij zegt: Als ik de loterij won, zou ik voor mezelf een nieuwe auto kopen."

B. "If I won the lottery, I would buy myself a new car. (unlikely)"

Als iets (likely = waarschijnlijk) is. Dan: doe zet je 

in de 'if'-bijzin het werkwoord in de tegenwoordige tijd...
