Learning Objectives

- The students can recognize GA and RP accents.

- The students can distinguish between a GA and an RP accent.

- The students have a general idea of what a GA and an RP accent sounds like.

- The students know that different accents may use some different words for the same item and can give a few examples of this.

- The students can reproduce and distinguish between different British and American accents.

Neuner A

We will be showing you guys a video about the differences between GA and RP.

After the video has ended, we will be asking  the students some questions about the video. 

Which accent do you like more?

Which English language do you use ?

Did you recognize any slangs in the video?

Neuner B: Homonyms

We will be giving a brief explanation on what the exercise is about. 

You will  fill in the gaps in sentences with these types of words.

Neuner C: Matching Exercise

You will be hearing a bunch of short audio fragments spoken in a GA or and RP accent. 

They will have to say if these fragments are examples of GA or RP. 

What American accents did you hear?

What British accents did you hear?

Neuner D: Role-play

Instructions

- We will show you two videos about the American and British accent. 

- After watching the video, each student will receive a card with a different accent. You will be role-playing a character based on the accent. 

- You will have to play these characters while walking around the classroom. 

- The goal for the students is to sort the characters based on the accents into two categories: British and American. ‘Britain’ will be on one side of the classroom, ‘America’ will be on the other side. 

- They will have 20 minutes to do so.

American Accent

- New York accent

- Boston accent

- Texas accent

- Southern California 

- Minnesota accent

- Atlanta accent

- Etc. 

British Accent

- RP

- Heightened RP

- London accent

- Norfolk accent (east anglia)

- West Country

- Southern Welsh

- Nothern Welsh

-Etc.
