Past Perfect
The past perfect is used when you speak about an action that happened BEFORE another action.
had + verbED or had + irregular verb

My mom had worked at the bank for seven years before she quit.
Daniel and Joshua had seen their sister before she walked down the aisle.
I had been at home for hours when they visited.

Past Simple with the Past Perfect
The past perfect is often used with the past simple.

Frederique had left the party as soon as she saw it was midnight.
Erik and Jacob had been friends ever since they first met.

  • So what's the difference between the past and present perfect?
  • Present Perfect: have / has --> influence on the present 
  • Past Perfect: had --> happened BEFORE something else
