§3.5 MOVING THE SKELETON
I can explain how the skeleton can move: joints and muscles
I can describe the 5 different joints, and give an example
I can draw a joint and describe the parts of a joint
I know what tendons and ligaments are
I can describe what a muscle can do: only pull or contract
I can explain why you need muscles as an antagonistic pair
p. 116-123

ball & socket joint
hinge joint
pivot joint
Gliding joint

JOINTS
A joint is a place where two bones meet. This is also the place where your skeleton can move.
p. 116-123
Slide 7 - Slide
TYPES OF JOINTS
Fixed -
no movement, skull
Ball and socket-
movement in all directions, hip/shoulder
Hinge-
movement in 1 direction, elbow/knee
Pivot-
turning movement, radius+ulna/neck
Gliding-
glide over each other, wrist/backbone
p. 116-123
Slide 8 - Slide
PART OF A JOINT
Ligaments: connect bone to bone
Tendon: connect bone to muscle
Synovial joint: ball and socket, hinge, pivot. Also have synovial fluid to oil the joint
p. 116-123
Slide 9 - Slide
MUSCLES
Muscles work in antagonistic pairs, because muscles can only pull or relax. They need a partner (antagonist) to pull the opposite way
p. 116-123
