At the end of this lesson you will know:

numbers and measurements, British vs American pronunciation and have practised speaking English

In which countries is English an official language?

Around 60 sovereign countries have English as an official language, such as

the obvious UK, USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

But also South-Africa, Singapore, Philipines, Barbados, Sint Maarten, Kenya, several Caribbean islands.

Do you pronounce the words with an American or English accent?

Different pronunciation?

British:

r - when followed by a vowel sound (klinker) - (at beginning of word) 

   - ring / marry

t - hard t - better (no pronunciation of r)

American:

r - every r in a word - butter

t - sound like d - butter sounds like budder

There are also differences between American and British English in the areas of spelling and vocabulary

In Britain they say:

Exercise

• Write down a short speech (key words) about why we should visit your hometown (it can be imaginary).
• Preparation time: 5 minutes
• Duration: 0,5 - 1 minute
• Everyone has a turn, you can do this by yourselves or in pairs (2 students)
• And we listen to each others speech.
