Wanneer gebruik je het?
De lijdende vorm gebruik je als iets wordt gedaan. 
Wat geeft het aan?
Het is niet belangrijk of niet bekend wie iets doet, maar het gaat erom dat het wordt gedaan/gebeurt.

Waar moet je op letten?
Als je duidelijk wilt maken wie iets doet, gebruik je een zinnetje dat begint met by:
English is spoken by millions of people.
Engels wordt gesproken door miljoenen mensen.
This book was written by Roald Dahl.
Dit boek werd geschreven door Roald Dahl.

Passive
De passive (lijdende vorm) wordt vaker in schrijftaal gebruikt en de active (bedrijvende vorm) vaker in spreektaal.
Je maakt de passive door een vorm van to be + voltooid deelwoord

In het Nederlands gebruik je worden of zijn +
voltooid deelwoord.

can + hele werkwoord kan (in staat zijn)
Let op! Als je can’t voluit schrijft, schrijf je het als één woord: cannot.
Voorbeelden:

I can speak three languages.
They can visit us tomorrow.
We can’t come to the meeting.
Charlie can’t walk to school by himself.

be able to + hele werkwoord = kan (in staat zijn)
Be able to betekent ‘in staat zijn’. Het betekent hetzelfde als het werkwoord can (= kunnen).

That athlete is able to run 15 miles an hour. / That athlete can run 15 miles an hour.
Can kun je niet bij alle werkwoordstijden gebruiken. Dan gebruik je be able to om aan te geven dat iets kan, bijvoorbeeld in de present perfect of met will.

I have been able to finish it on time.
