On New Year's Eve, many people take a New Year's dive. People with heart disease (hartziekte) should be careful with this. Due to the large temperature difference, blood pressure shoots up. Muscles start to shiver (trillen) and heat is released and thus maintains the internal body temperature, around 37 degrees Celsius. Cold stimulates and activates brown fat. The browner fat you have, the better you can keep yourself warm. This fat keeps us warm by burning other fats, without shivering.
