The Communist Party started reforming the economy during the civil war

• Lenin made the state take over banks and factories             Nationalisation 
• The government also took control of farmland             Farmers had to give a lot of their crops to the state

Problems

• The nationalized companies didn't make as much money as expected
  
• Farmers didn't want to cooperate with the new rules
  
• This resulted in famine.
• Lenin had to reverse his measures to a certain extent

1924: Lenin dies

Stalin in power

• Stalin introduced a "planned economy" in 1928
•  Stalin's government made plans for what should be produced over 5 years
• Focus was on heavy industry like coal, oil, and machinery. Consumer goods were considered less important

An economic plan in which the government has determined what its businesses must produce over the next five years and in what quantities.

• Small farms were combined into large collective farms (kolkhoz)                collectivizing
•  Goal was to increase efficiency with modern equipment
  
• Many farmers resisted giving up their land and animals
