Pay attention
Read the question carefully: Understand what the statement is saying and look for specific words or phrases that are important.
Look for evidence in the text: Search for the parts of the text that relate to the statement and compare what is written there with the statement in the question.
Pay attention to nuances: Sometimes statements are almost true but not entirely. Look for words like "key" (most important) or "growing focus" (increasing attention), which add extra meaning.

Slide 8 - Slide

In this case:

Compare statements with the text: Look at what the text says about awareness and the focus on food waste. For example, is it really the case that raising consumer awareness is "key," or is more emphasis placed on other causes?

Slide 9 - Slide

Statement 1: ''Making consumers aware of the food they throw away is key to solving the food waste problem."
The text says: "Efforts to reduce food waste tend to focus on consumption practices, with less attention to the production and distribution side."
This means that current efforts mainly target consumer behavior (consumption practices). However, the text does not explicitly state that raising consumer awareness is the most important (key) solution. It highlights that attention is divided and that other aspects, such as production and distribution, also play a role.

Answer: False
Raising consumer awareness is mentioned, but the text does not claim that this is the key solution.

Statement 2: "There has been a growing focus on the issue of food waste."
The text says: "Food waste is receiving increasing attention from managers, activists, policymakers, and scholars, who call it a global social problem."
This indicates that there is indeed growing attention to food waste, as multiple groups acknowledge and discuss the problem.

Answer: True
The text clearly supports the idea that there is a growing focus on food waste.

Analysis of the text (paragraph 4):
The aim of the survey is described in the first sentence:
"We used a nationally representative survey to see whether individuals were concerned about organizational food waste, and would support policies intended to reduce it."
This means that the survey aimed to determine:
How concerned people are about food waste by organizations (such as shops and restaurants).
Whether people are willing to support policies to reduce food waste.
The rest of the paragraph provides more details about the results, but these only serve to support the main aim of the survey.

What is this question about?
1. Understanding context:
We must understand the paragraph as a whole, including the main message: how awareness of the interconnections between food, water, and energy contributes to concern about food waste. It is about how these concepts are related to each other.
2.Determining the meaning of the gap:
The student must analyze what is missing in the sentence:
"Awareness of these interconnections means that people recognize that food, energy, and water are all [...?...] ."
The missing word or phrase must explain the nature of the relationship between food, water, and energy.

3.Analyzing answer options:
We must consider which option best fits the message of the text:
"intertwined at some level": This option emphasizes interconnectedness, which aligns well with "interconnections."
"primary necessities for people": This could also be true, but it emphasizes basic needs, which is not the main focus of the text.
"valuable sustainable resources": This sounds logical, but it does not perfectly align with the focus on "interconnections."
4. Logic and consistency:
We must evaluate which option is both content-wise and stylistically consistent with the rest of the text.

Analyse van de text (paragraaf 7)
The key sentence about intentions:
"Researchers have long been concerned about findings that show a disconnect between people's intentions and their corresponding actions."
This means that people may have good intentions, but these do not always lead to actual behavior that reduces food waste.
Support from the text:
"Some food waste research examining this issue shows that intentions to reduce food waste have a mixed and generally weak impact on actual consumer practices."
This reinforces the message that there is a gap between what people intend to do (intentions) and what they actually do (actions).

Slide 21 - Slide

Comparison of the answer options:
People who are concerned about food waste try to be economical buyers.
❌ This is not mentioned in the text. There is no reference to economical buying in relation to intentions or actions.
People working with a meal plan tend to lessen their food waste.
❌ This is also not discussed in the text. Meal planning is not mentioned.
People's goals regarding food waste differ from what they actually do.
✔️ This aligns with the main message of the text: there is a disconnect between intentions (goals) and actions (behavior).
