Slide 4 - Quiz

Make an indirect sentence:
How many people were there at the party? Do you know?

Slide 5 - Open question

Indirect Questions
Have a look at this conversation.

Me: Excuse me. Could you tell me where the nearest station is?
Person in the street: Certainly. It's along that road on the right.
Me: Thank you. And do you know if there's a supermarket near here?
Person in the street: Yes, there's one next to the station.
Me: Thank you very much for your help.

We use indirect questions when asking for help in the street, because they are very polite. Indirect questions start with a phrase like 'could you tell me...' or 'do you know...'.

Direct VS Indirect Questions
Direct question: Where is the bank?
Indirect question: Could you tell me where the bank is?

Notice that in the indirect question the verb ('is') comes after the subject ('the bank'), in the same way with a normal positive sentence ('the bank is over there'), but in the direct question the verb 'is' before the subject 'the bank'.
This is called inversion, and it is used to make direct questions in many verb tenses in English, but we don't use inversion in indirect questions.

Slide 7 - Slide

Make an indirect sentence:
When does the concert start? Let's find out?

Slide 8 - Open question

Make an embedded question:
Start with "Do you know"
And use: when does the class start?

Slide 9 - Open question

Embedded questions
What you just worked with are embedded questions (verbs+WH-clauses).

Words such as who, when, where and why are not always used to ask questions.
They are often found as part of a statement.
In these cases they are not followed by the question word order.

> I can't remember where I heard that song before.
NOT: I can't remember where did I hear that song before.

Slide 10 - Slide

Make an embedded question:
Start with "Could you tell me"
And use: is there free parking?

Slide 11 - Open question
